Between Then, Now, and What’s Next

The past has a way of staying close, even when we don’t invite it. It lingers in quiet moments, in reactions we don’t fully understand, in the parts of us shaped by what we survived. Sometimes it feels heavier than memory itself, like something unfinished, still asking to be felt.

The present, meanwhile, asks for our attention in a different way. It wants us here, grounded, functional. It wants us to move forward while parts of us are still looking back. Living in the present can feel like a balancing act, one foot anchored in what was, the other unsure where to land. We try to breathe in the now, but the past keeps tapping on our shoulder, reminding us it hasn’t been fully heard.

Then there’s the future; quiet, distant, and full of expectation. It holds hope, but also pressure. Who we should become. What we should have figured out by now. The future can feel like a promise and a threat at the same time, especially when the present feels fragile and the past still aches.

Living between these three can be exhausting. Carrying yesterday, surviving today, and preparing for tomorrow all at once. It’s a constant negotiation between healing and functioning, remembering and becoming. Some days it feels like being pulled in three directions, unsure which version of yourself needs you most.

If this is where you find yourself, know this: it’s okay to live in the in-between. You are not failing for feeling torn. Growth doesn’t always mean leaving the past behind or having the future mapped out. Sometimes it means staying with yourself right where you are learning how to hold all three gently, without letting any one of them define you completely.
