Somewhere Between Who I Was and Who I’m Afraid to Be

There’s a version of growth that doesn’t look like progress. It doesn’t arrive with clarity or confidence. It shows up as distance, from people, from certainty, from the life you thought you were meant to want.

I’m standing in that space now. Not lost exactly, just… undecided. Questioning whether the things I’m chasing are truly mine, or just ideas I borrowed because they looked like success from far away. Some days I feel ahead of my time. Other days I feel painfully behind.

There’s a quiet pressure that comes with self-awareness. Once you start noticing your patterns, you can’t unsee them. You recognize when you’re performing instead of living. When you’re choosing comfort over truth. When you’re afraid to want something fully because wanting means risking disappointment.

I ask myself uncomfortable questions late at night. Am I becoming who I am, or just who I learned to survive as? Am I growing, or just drifting with better language for it?

What no one really tells you is that becoming yourself can feel isolating. When you stop wanting what everyone else wants, conversations change. Rooms feel different. Even love feels uncertain when you’re no longer sure which version of yourself, you’re offering. And still, there’s something honest in this unease.

I don’t feel finished, but I feel real. Stripped of certainty. Sitting with contradictions wanting depth but fearing exposure, wanting peace but addicted to motion. Maybe this stage isn’t meant to feel good, maybe it’s meant to feel true.

So, I let myself be in between: between ambition and rest. Between loneliness and independence. Between the person I was proud to be and the one I’m still learning how to accept. I don’t have answers yet, just awareness and maybe that’s enough for now.

Because becoming isn’t always about arrival. Sometimes it’s just about staying; staying honest, staying curious, staying alive in the questions until something finally feels like home.
