When Good News Lands, Where Does It Go First?

Daily writing prompt
You get some great, amazingly fantastic news. What’s the first thing you do?

And before I celebrate, before I post, before I tell anyone… there’s a pause.

That pause says everything.

Sometimes the first thing I do is nothing. I let the moment exist without witnesses. I reread the message, I close my eyes, I allow myself to feel it without explaining it, without sharing it, without shrinking it for anyone else’s understanding.

Because good news can feel fragile when you’ve lived through disappointment.

There are times when joy arrives and instinctively looks for safety. Not everyone gets immediate access to happiness, especially if they weren’t there during the waiting, the doubt, the quiet nights where hope felt foolish. So, I ask myself: who held me when this was still uncertain?

That’s usually who I tell first.

Sometimes it’s a person. Sometimes it’s silence. Sometimes it’s a deep breath that finally doesn’t feel heavy. And sometimes, surprisingly, it’s gratitude not loud or dramatic, just a soft acknowledgment that something shifted in my favour.

I’ve learned that the way we respond to good news says a lot about how we’ve been surviving. Some of us celebrate loudly because we’ve learned to take joy whenever it shows up. Others protect it, cup it gently, because we’ve learned how quickly it can disappear.

There’s no wrong response. There’s only honesty?
