Someone once asked me, “What’s a mystery from your own life that you’ve never solved?”
And I didn’t have to think long. It’s this, “‘why I go quiet when I actually care the most”
You’d think it would be the opposite. That when something matters, I’d speak more, explain more, fight harder to be understood, but for me, it doesn’t happen like that.
When it’s surface, I can talk. I can joke. I can move freely, but when it’s real, when it touches something deeper, something in me pulls back.
I start measuring my words.
I question how much to reveal.
I wonder how it will be received, how it might be used, whether it will come back to me in a way I can’t control.
And sometimes… I just stop.
Not because I don’t feel, but because I feel too much to risk it being mishandled. That’s the part I don’t fully understand.
Why does openness feel like exposure?
Why does honesty feel like something I have to defend?
Why does being seen sometimes feel more dangerous than being misunderstood?
Maybe it’s learned, maybe it’s from moments where I tried to explain myself and it didn’t land the way I hoped. Where something real got reduced, questioned, or turned against me. So now, even when I want to speak, there’s a pause.
A quiet decision point:
Is it safe? Is it worth it?
And if the answer isn’t clear, I retreat. Because I know connection requires openness, I know understanding doesn’t happen in silence. But there’s still a part of me that chooses protection over expression.
Maybe one day I’ll understand it fully.
Maybe one day I won’t hesitate as much.
But for now, I’m learning this, even if I don’t say everything, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing there.
Some of us are still figuring out how to be heard without feeling like we’re losing ourselves in the process.
