To the lover who stays because it is not a race,

There is something beautiful about choosing to stay when there is nothing to prove. Love was never meant to be a competition of who can arrive first, who can give more, who can say the right words, or who can make the other person fall the hardest. Sometimes love is simply two people deciding that they would rather walk slowly together than run separately.

To be prudent with each other is to understand that neither of you is a finished person. You will have moments when you misunderstand each other, moments when one of you needs silence and moments when the other needs reassurance. There will be days when love feels effortless and days when it asks something from you. But prudence says, “Let us be careful with what we have.” Not because it is fragile, but because it matters.

What is there to gain by winning each other if, in the process, you lose each other? What is the point of being right if being right becomes more important than being together? There are arguments that can be won and still leave two people farther apart. There are words that can be spoken honestly and still wound unnecessarily. Sometimes loving someone means knowing when to speak, when to listen, when to apologise, and when to simply sit beside them until the storm passes.

Because the choice was made before everything else mattered. Before the opinions of family, before the voices of friends, before the expectations of the world, there were two people who looked at each other and said, in whatever way they knew how, “I choose you.” Everything else can matter. Family matters. Friends matter. The world matters. Responsibilities matter. But none of those things should make you forget the person you decided to build with.

And perhaps that is what staying really means. Not refusing to leave no matter what, but refusing to treat love like something disposable whenever it becomes difficult. It means remembering the beginning when the middle becomes confusing. It means giving each other room to grow without making growth feel like abandonment. It means understanding that sometimes the person beside you does not need to be fixed; they need to be understood.

The lover who stays does not rush the relationship into becoming something it has not yet had time to become. They do not measure love by how quickly everything happens. They allow trust to become trust, friendship to become friendship, intimacy to become intimacy, and commitment to become something deeper than a promise made in a beautiful moment.

Because it is not a race.

There is no prize for reaching the finish line first if the person you loved is no longer beside you. There is no victory in proving that you cared more. There is no achievement in becoming so consumed by everything around the relationship that the relationship itself becomes secondary.

So can we walk slowly.

Can we choose each other in the ordinary moments, choose patience when impatience would be easier, choose understanding before assumptions, choose conversation before distance, choose forgiveness where forgiveness is deserved, choose boundaries where boundaries are necessary. And when the world becomes loud, remember that you do not have to let every outside voice become an inside voice between the two of us.

Perhaps love is not about finding someone who will never hurt you, disappoint you, misunderstand you, or need time to figure things out. Perhaps it is about finding someone with whom you can face those things without immediately turning against one another.

The lover who stays understands that there is still so much life ahead. There will be seasons you cannot predict, changes you cannot prepare for, and moments when you will both become different versions of yourselves. But if the choice remains the same to come back to each other, to learn each other again, to protect what is yours together, then perhaps that is enough.

Because in the end, everything else is secondary to the simple miracle of two people choosing each other and continuing to choose each other.

Not because the world told us to.

But because, somewhere beneath all the noise, we still believe that being together is worth taking our time for.
